The Seattle Times recently published an article on Why Seattle Public Schools is closing its highly capable cohort program. The Cascadia Elementary School PTA Board then shared a response and alternative solutions in an op-ed with The Seattle Times. We encourage families to read and share this response to help circulate the message and increase our community’s understanding of Seattle Public Schools’ proposals.
We strongly believe that shutting down the Highly Capable Cohort (HCC) program during a budget and enrollment crisis is a mistake.
Our recommendations are for SPS to:
- Retain the current HCC program for now.
- Increase efforts to make the HC identification process more equitable.
- Resume advanced learning opportunities for all kids who need it, including effective Middle and High School acceleration options.
We are gathering signatures of those who support these recommendations. Signatures collected by Friday, May 3, 2024, 11:59 pm will be shared with Superintendent Brent Jones. Show your support today.
Please take 30 seconds to show your support for retaining the HCC program!
