Advocacy: SPS Board & Advanced Learning Task Force Meetings

As many parents and guardians of students at Cascadia know, there is an ongoing discussion about the best way to provide services to students identified as “advanced learners” in the district (and beyond).

The Cascadia PTA Board suggests that Cascadia families consider attending upcoming meetings of the Seattle School Board, Board Member Community Meetings and Advanced Learning Task Force. At each School Board meeting, there is an opportunity for public comment, and we encourage participation. If you’d like to discuss your comments in advance with a Cascadia PTA Board member, we would be honored to listen and provide additional background. Visit the Contact Us page to get in touch; if you’re not sure who to email, try our president, vice president, or advocacy director.

You’ll find the Seattle School Board meetings are listed in the event calendar, and if you sync that with your favorite digital calendar, you’ll be able to plan around them quite effortlessly. (Except, of course, for traffic, or last-minute schedule changes; we do advise that you confirm meetings before you make arrangements to attend.) You can also watch school board meetings live online and on cable (see below), or view them online post-meeting.

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, there is an additional public forum for the open Board position created by the resignation of Betty Patu, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Rainier Beach High School Performing Arts Center. Three candidates remain of a larger initial slate; the new member will be appointed on Sept. 18. Again, check in with the PTA Board if you have questions or would like background.
