BE PART OF A COMMUNITY ART INSTALLATION!

Art Interruptions 2020 Overview:

The City of Seattle’s Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS), in partnership with Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), has commissioned six artists to develop small-scale temporary artworks for the 2020 Art Interruptions in the Northwest Seattle Neighborhood Greenway. Working with SDOT and ARTS, selected artists will design and develop a series of small-scale temporary artworks to be installed on city-owned street furniture and infrastructure (e.g., signal boxes, utility poles, railings, sidewalks, street trees, tree pits, etc.) for up to a 12-month period from August 1, 2020 to August 14, 2021, along the neighborhood greenway. The artworks should draw the attention of pedestrians through surprise, contemplation, beauty, or humor, and enliven the space with an element of the unexpected.

Artwork Participation

Artist, Erin Shigaki, is interested in working with students at Cascadia and Robert Eaglestaff to create her Art Interruptions installation along the chain-link fence along 92nd St. The artist has created the attached worksheet for students that would like to participate.

Artwork Overview

The artwork consists of thick red knotted ropes, draped with wooden plaques bearing wishes and questions for passers-by to contemplate. The red knotted rope will be wrapped around the upper fence bar and wooden plaques have small holes to allow for zip tie attachment to red rope and chain link fence. The artist will create between 30-50 wooden plaques to attach to the robe and fence. The intent is to work with the nearby schools and community to create wishes and questions that will be written on wooden plaques. We are aiming to install the artwork in August 2020, the artist will be responsible for installation, maintenance and deinstallation in August 2021.
