1000% Me: Growing up Mixed – Film Screening & Discussion
Tuesday, April 30, 2024 from 6 – 7:45 pm at Whittier Elementary School
Join mixed-race children and their families for a screening of the film 1000% Me: Growing up Mixed, followed by a child-centered facilitated discussion. In the film, W. Kamau Bell tackles the joys and challenges of growing up mixed-race through conversations with kids and families. Bell explores how young people navigate issues of identity in a world that can ask them to pick a side and reveals the many joys and complexities of what it means to raise multiracial children.
This event is for mixed-race children (in Grade 3 and above) and their families.
Register for this event. Pizza dinner will be provided. Free childcare is available for younger children ages 3 and older, provided by the Whittier Kids Program.
This film screening and discussion is facilitated by the Whittier PTA EDI Committee and open to all families in the community.
Welcome to Cascadia’s 5th Grade parents-organized camping trip at Cornet Bay Retreat Center. The centerpiece of the camping ground is a large grassy meadow on a bay, surrounded by old-growth trees. It is safe, roomy and well-equipped for a weekend of child play and parent relaxation. What a fantastic opportunity to create lasting memories before graduation!

Join us on Friday, May 3rd for another Cascadia Family Movie Night
Come join your classmates for a cozy good time on Friday, May 3rd. Siblings are of course welcome! Bring blankets and pillows to cozy up on the gym floor for the movie. Low-backed chairs are welcome *in the back* near the bleachers so as to not block the views of those behind, but bring a towel or blanket so they don’t scuff the floors. The Commons will open at 5:30pm for families that want to bring their dinner to eat there (no food or drink in the gym, please). Move starts at 6:00pm.
Enter the building through the Commons doors. The main entrance will be locked.
Note: This is not a drop-off event. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Throughout the week of May 6-10, activities will include a coffee cart, special potluck meals, flowers coordinated by room parents, and the opportunity to write notes of appreciation. Most activities will take place during the school day and are coordinated and supported by the PTA board. We will also hang a poster in the school cafeteria for kids to sign and leave short notes during Staff Appreciation week. More details will come through your class room parents. If anyone has any questions or concerns about Appreciation Week please let us know! We cant wait to hear what you all decide to do!
Please join us for a board and card game night on May 8 at the school from 5:30 to 7:30.
This event is organized by a group of parents, and is not an official school event, and is not sponsored by the PTA.
Cama beach had to cancel the cabins for repair work, so we don’t currently have a plan for 2nd grade camping in 2024.
