PTA Family Registration Now Open!

The Cascadia PTA family registration form is now available. You can find the form under the Family Registration tab, or click here.

We will use the information gathered in this form to:

  • build our email communications lists for the Dragon Digest (our weekly newsletter) and grade level emails
  • create classroom rosters to share with room parents,
  • publish and share our school directory (Dragon Directory)
  • share volunteer opportunities
  • build our Cascadia PTA membership
  • and more!

The form will gather information about your student(s) classroom assignment and family contacts. Participation is voluntary, but we highly recommend you take a few minutes to complete the easy-to-use form to help us connect you to your Cascadia Community. We hope to get our communications up and running right away, as well as share the Dragon Directory in the first weeks of school.

Calling all volunteers!

Attention volunteers! The volunteer coordinators have made sign-up lists up for our most-urgent volunteer needs for the start of the year. We’re using Sign-up Genius for these, and you should see tabs to easily switch to all current sign-up sheets from this page–it’s not just science kits. The link is here:

We’ll be adding sign-ups on an ongoing basis over the course of the year for anything that comes up.
You will also need to update your volunteer paperwork! Instructions are on the volunteer page.

School supply shopping lists available now!

Grade levels work together closely at Cascadia. As such, each grade level has created a supply list for all students on that grade to bring in for use this school year. If you are able to attend the Welcome Back Event on August 31st feel free to bring supplies in then. Please collect them in one bag marked with your child’s name and their teacher. Supplies will be collected in the shared learning spaces outside the classrooms.

If you need financial help purchasing all the supplies do not hesitate to contact the main office at 206.413.2000.   We want to ensure every child has the tools they need to learn.

School supply lists have been posted on the school website, here.

Welcome to 2017-2018 School Year

Dear Cascadia Families,

I am excited to officially welcome you to the new 2017-2018 school year! I hope you are having a restful and fun filled summer. As you know we are in a year of change; change of location and change of leadership. We are thrilled to move into our beautiful new building in the Licton Springs neighborhood and I am delighted to return to the community I taught 1st and 5th grade and was House Administrator in for 8 years. I am looking forward to continuing to build a community on the strong foundation of collaboration and engagement we have had through the years. We have about a month before school begins on September 6th, and a lot has been happening to prepare for the year.

This summer work is being finalized on the building to ensure that we are ready to open the first day of school. Classrooms are being stocked with desks, books, and technology to guarantee our kids are ready to learn. Teachers have been learning new curriculum and are about to start setting up their classrooms. The playground is in its final stages, the four square, maps, chess board and hopscotch lines are about to be painted. I have been working with the school district and community to ensure student safety throughout the day, including arrival and dismissal procedures. Look for lots more information on each of these throughout the rest of the summer and into the school year.

Currently, our school website is being revamped by the district, but we are hoping to have it up and running soon. On it you will find much more information about curriculum, school supply lists, and our transportation plan. Please check it out soon for much of the information you may be wondering.

There are a couple of events coming up that I want to invite you to. On Friday August 25th, there will be the 2nd unveiling of the murals led by the artist Andrew Morrison. We will meet at the Cascadia entrance at 5pm. On Sunday August 27th, the new Safe Schools Greenway is having its ribbon cutting, we will be meeting at North 92nd and Ashworth at 2pm. All are encouraged to bring their bikes and ride the new Greenway. The week of August 28th is when teachers start back to work preparing for the year, expect to hear from your child’s teacher that week. On Thursday August 31st from 4-6pm we will be having our Welcome Back Event. You will have a chance to tour the school and meet teachers, there will even be an icy treat for you to enjoy. Feel free to drop off school supplies and we will have some of the start of school and volunteer paperwork you can fill out. Then our final event before school begins is the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony September 5th at 10:30 am. Come see district and community leaders officially open our new building the day before school begins.

I hope you have a wonderful rest of your summer and I am excited to work with you and your family to have a successful school year.

Best,

Anna Birinyi

New Cascadia Calendar

Cascadia PTA has a new calendar system. You can find the calendar on the PTA website (http://cascadiapta.org/events/), or on the school website (http://cascadiaes.seattleschools.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=1927&pageId=1943).

One great thing about this new system is that you can filter the calendar to display only the events you wish to see.  From the PTA website (http://cascadiapta.org/events/), you can use the ‘categories’ drop down menu and choose your own child(ren)’s grade, or ‘All School’.  Holding down the shift key while you choose the categories allows you to select multiple categories at one time.

Subscribing to the calendar is a great way to stay on top of upcoming events.  Once you have chosen your optimal set of categories, you can subscribe to the calendar using the ‘subscribe’ button at the bottom right.  If you do not use one of the listed web calendars, you can also obtain the .ics address which will work with most web calendars (for example, the address for all events is:  https://calendar.google.com/calendar/ical/7v91c135gje6u4ap2bhscf432cocpake%40import.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics).  If you have previously subscribed to the Google calendar you will need to change your subscription to the new one.

Cascadia 2017-18 Staffing (June 30th)

June 30, 2017

Hello Cascadia Families for 2017-18!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

I understand there were quite a few parents who did not receive my message last Thursday. As we make the transition to our new building and new team we need to send messages about next year to the “next year” list. Unfortunately, at this time the system only let’s us pull one email address per student, listed as the “initial contact.” Over the summer once the computer system transitions to the current year we will be able to send messages to both parents. In the mean time, if you are the initial contact please forward to others in your family.

I will also be working with the PTA to put any communications up on Facebook and out through the PTA. During the summer, PTA announcements and updates will be available on the school website: cascadiaes.seattleschools.org. Thanks for your understanding and patience as we make the transition!

I was able to tour the school on Friday and the building is beautiful! The building is filled with light coming in the many thoughtfully placed windows. The courtyards and outdoor spaces will be wonderful spots to engage in learning and the classroom spaces are warm and inviting.

Our building is mostly finished, just some final touches that need to happen. The playground is still in process and the fields aren’t slated to go in until over the summer. But, we will have a wonderful space to move into come September!

The PTA is looking for a volunteer or pair of volunteers to coordinate the school garden transition to the new Cascadia site. Current volunteers have been working with the district and have identified a site for the new garden space. Our current garden educator, Rowan, plans to continue to provide garden education in conjunction with the third grade staff. We need someone(s) who can liaise between the PTA, the third grade staff, and the garden educator to help the garden education program take root at the new site. Additionally the coordinator(s) will need to organize work parties to get existing garden infrastructure moved to the new site and any new infrastructure built. Based on past experience, we anticipate a high turnout for families for work parties – we just need someone who can organize them! All of our third graders receive garden education thanks to a grant from the PTA. To ensure that future cohorts of third graders are able to receive garden education, we need your involvement now! Please contact Kimberly Christensen if you are interested in becoming our new parent-garden coordinator.

Thank you!
